I need to document this. For some time now I’ve had visions of of visiting Belize. The barrier reef (Second largest in the world) with it’s many islands has captured my imagination. Add to that the English language, beaches, jungles and mountains and we’re looking at a special place.
Hopefully I can add more info to this page as I discover more.
Attractions:
1) Barrier Reef
2) Tropical Jungle
3) Beaches
4) Mountains
5) Mayan Ruins
Getting There:
Belize City seems to be the preferred port of entry to the country. The best jumping off point seems to be Dallas, Texas. From Ottawa, Canada it looks that round trip flights cost around $1000.

Driving from Ottawa:
Driving distance: 3615.5 miles
Trip duration: 8 days, 2 hours, 14 minutes
Driving time: 66 hours, 14 minutes
Cost: $507.85 @ $1 per liter

The capital city of Belize is Belmopan, but the largest city is Belize City and unlike Belmopan it is located on the coast.

Now I need to find someones account of things to do in Belize rather than commercial tour descriptions.

Well it matters on how you want to do it… like a tourist or like a local. Both experiances are vastly different. The tourist experiance is rather insular. MY husband and I relocated down here three years ago. I have done the drive throught mexico, with dogs! We live in Ladyville the villiage that the international air port is in. If you havent found some one to talk to yet about it let me know I can give you the low down on where to go how to get there cheap and even better where not to go…. Fo instance part of your information above lists how much it will cost to drive but you need to take is immigration costs, tol costs, and (mordidas). Belize city is where you will probably have to start off from but not necessarily. There is more if you like. K

(Kari,
It’s great to meet you and thanks for the comment on the blog.
I think what I had in mind for the perfect experience would be to rent a small open boat and go island hopping down the barrier reef with a tent and a fishing rod.My kids could handle this but not sure if my wife is enough of a trooper to put up with the hardships. Not too keen on dragging one of my boats all the way down to Belize.
Renting a hut on the beach somewhere also sounds perfect and much easier than trying to do the boat thing. Complete family could handle this.)
I am looking to take a trip to Belize and also need some suggestions of non-commercial things to do/places to stay/etc. Ideally I could rent a hut in the jungle or on the beach… The island hopping/camping/boat rental idea is intriguing as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks
