Early Spring Flowers

Remnants from Last Year.

Last Year

There seems to be lots of Spring Moodiness around here.

Last Year, Queen Anne's Lace

For years I’ve been trying to figure out the name of this plant “Queen Anne’s Lace”. I finally happened upon it in a video of NY City of all places “A Rural Experience in the Middle of Manhattan”. With the name it is easy with the net to find all the secret background on the plant.

Last time in Manhattan I tried to find the abandoned elevated railway but ran out of time. Next time…

The Geese seem to have added to their nest, so much so I can’t see anything by eye. Will have to trundle out to the swamp for a better look.

Return of the Goose

A pair of Canada Geese have seen fit to nest again in the beaver pond. If you didn’t know where to look it would be hard to find them amid the forest of Cattails.

Much earlier in the spring I saw two visiting Geese at the Dam, March 19, 2009.

Last year May 04, was the first time I saw the Geese nesting in the Dam. So this year we are a couple of weeks earlier.

Nesting Canada Goose

It will be interesting to see if they have more Goslings than the single one of last year. I’ve read on the net that the incubation period is 28 to 30 days. Now to figure out when last years chicks were laid.

The Beaver that had arrived a little earlier now seems to have disappeared, probably taken out by the Fisher. The Fisher will keep the Geese on their toes.

Spring Ice Crystals

One could really go to town with ice crystals as the subject. So many, so different.

Today, I could hear the first frogs in the bush around the house. I wanted to capture one and then shoot some portraits of a frog on the last remnants of winters snow. But the frogs were too clever for me.

For me around here, frogs are the real harbingers of spring. How they survive the freezing nights is a mystery and sometimes freezing days.
