Big Screen, Big Picture

Big screen and good music, that’s what I want to view this series of pictures.

Sounds like a perfect job for an HD TV connected to a Stereo. Well the Stereo does the job alright but not the TV. The TV is just crap, at least mine is and I haven’t seen anything significantly better in stores. The colors are bad, the transfer function is bad, the dynamic range is bad. But I think maybe the worst is the aspect ratio, 16×9, what were those boys smoking when they came up with that.

I don’t like that 16×9 HD aspect ratio. I think the aspect ratio is more important in a display than first appears. A display really does not have many pixels, so you want to make use of as many as possible, so it would be nice if your crop matched the display. I find 16×9 is not a crop factor that is all that useful.

Then there is a little issue with framing of the image on the display. Each display of course has a physical frame surrounding your picture. It would be nice if this physical frame sort of corresponded to the picture and this only happens well if you use a 16×9 crop for the picture.

Since my TV is such a dud, I am left to enjoy the slide show on my computer. Of course this has it’s own problems.

This photo is beautiful. I keep trying to take photos like this, but I never seem to pull it off. It looks great.

Luscious colors and very nice the way the light pulls my eye through the scene.

I have thought about the ratio of the HD screen. Not very friendly to photographs. I haven’t even tried looking at any of mine on our new TV. Can’t get excited about it.

The ratio of a camera’s image isn’t very friendly as well. With most “standard” print sizes are in the 4×5 ratio. However, I have batch outputted photos to 16×9 to put on my HDTV and the results are worth the effort.

As long as I can watch ice hockey in HD, I’m happy!
