Hockey misinformation is rampant on the net and on the ice.
To start here are a couple of examples of misinformation:
- I have never seen a proper description for taping sticks or how to shoot the slap shot or the snap shot.
- Just about every description I’ve seen for the wrist shot describes only one variant of the wrist shot, the one that is not used frequently.
When I was a youngster learning I could never find anyone that could explain anything, it was just try try until something just clicked and it all started to work.
Then it came my turn to try and teach my son and I had to come up with explanations and demonstrations to show him how to do some of the nifty skills in hockey. This experience forced me to put words to all those skills.
Here are some of the straight goods.
First to feel good on the ice you need to be good at three things:
- Skating
- Stick Handling
- Fear
Feeling good on the ice is about confidence in your skill level.

The Difference between Contact and Non Contact Hockey – I think the issue of violence in hockey is completely misrepresented by both parties for and against.
The Snap Shot – Easiest of all shots (How to shoot a snap shot)
The Slap Shot – The second easiest of shots (How to shoot a slap shot)
The Wrist Shot - The most difficult but the most accurate of shots (How to shoot a wrist shot)

I learned to play hockey when there was no such thing as politically correct. Our coaches gave us the real answers. We played a rough game without helmets. Forwards where considered wimpy if they wore shoulder pads. Sticks where not strong enough to shoot slap shots. Boom Boom Geoffrion was just learning his thing.
